Spaghetti and Sausage Meatballs with Caramelized Onion and Portabella Mushroom Sauce

Follow Hapemom's recipe for the meatballs and add 1 tsp Italian seasoning. This recipe only uses 1 pound of ground turkey.

Ingredients

  • For the sauce:
  • 1 pound sausage meatballs
  • 1 tsp parsley
  • 1 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 15 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 3 ounces tomato paste
  • 1/8 tsp red pepper flakes
  • pinch of black pepper
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 small sweet onion, caramelized
  • 1 large portabella mushroom, sliced
  • 1/4 cup more reserved warm water, for sauce (add later)
  • 12-14 ounces spaghetti noodles
  • For the noodles:
  • a teaspoon of butter
  • a few pinches garlic salt
  • parmesan cheese, to taste

Preparation

Step 1

Start off by preparing the sauce. Add the tomato sauce and paste to a sauce pan, along with the rest of the spices/ingredients and 1/4 cup water, stir. Simmer on low. Add the mushrooms about 15 minutes later.

Next, prepare the meatballs. Cook them on low in a medium covered pan and turn them on occasion so that they brown on all sides.

While meatballs are cooking, caramelize the onions. When onions are caramelized, add them to the sauce and let them simmer together until the meatballs are finished cooking. Stir in 1/4 cup more warm water. Continue simmering.

When the meatballs are cooked and browned on all sides, add them to the sauce. Simmer together on low while you cook the spaghetti noodles.

Add butter, garlic salt and parmesan to noodles once they've cooked and been strained.
