- 1/4 cup hot water
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 (8-ounce) bottle Italian dressing
- 3 cucumbers, cut into 1/8-inch slices
- 1 medium-sized onion, cut into 1/2-inch slices
Ham 'n' Dumplings

In an 8-quart soup pot, combine the water, ham, and apples over medium-high heat and bring to a boil
- 8 cups water
- 1 (2 1/2 pounds) fully-cooked semi-boneless ham, cubed
- 2 (6 ounce each) packages dried apples

- 1 cup milk

- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon meringue powder
- 2 tablespoons water plus more to make the right consistency
- 1 teaspoon vanilla

Frosting: Ideally start on this the day before to give it time to cool fully
- Frosting:
- 1-3/4 cups water plus 1/4 cup water, separated
- 1-3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 Tbsp light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- scant 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 3 Tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
- Cake:
- 3-1/2 Tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 10 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/6 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- scant 1/2 tsp baking powder
- scant 1/2 tsp baking soda
- a pinch of salt
- 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup whole milk
