Chewy Sugar Cookies

Chewy, classic sugar cookies that have stood the test of time. A favorite on holiday cookie trays and for gift giving.
Ingredients
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup salted butter, softened, 2 sticks
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 extra-large egg
- 1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract

Step 1
In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Set aside.
In a large bowl and using a mixer, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and creamy. Beat in the egg and vanilla.
Gradually, beat in the flour mixture on low speed.
Preheat oven to 375° F. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls (about 1 inch). Place onto un-greased cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart. You can also roll the dough in sugars for some added sweetness and texture.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are light golden.
Let stand on cookie sheet for 1 minute then remove cookies to wire cooling racks. Makes about 48 cookies.
Optional:
When cookies are completely cool, frost with simple icing (confectioners sugar and enough cream for desired consistency. Icing can be tinted with food coloring) and decorate tops with sprinkles or sparkling sugar, OR dip cookies half way in melted milk chocolate chips. Allow time for icing/chocolate to harden before serving or storing.
