- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- Fine salt
- 4 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for brushing waffle iron
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, sprinkles and maraschino cherries, for topping
- Special equipment: waffle iron (preferably Belgian style)

- 2 ⁄3 cup soy sauce
- 1 ⁄2 cup chicken broth
- 1 ⁄3 cup rice wine
- 3 1⁄2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 ⁄4 teaspoon white pepper
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 ⁄4 cup water
