Preparation
Step 1
Make pastry and form into a ball. Pare and core apples. Combine sugar and nutmeg. On lightly floured surface, divide pastry into 6 parts. Roll each part into a 7 to 9 inch circle or square. Place apple in center of each. Fill hollow with 1 T. sugar/nutmeg mixture and 1 T. butter. Mold pastry around apple, covering completely. Place in 13 x 9 baking dish. Refrigerate 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Make syrup by combining brown sugar with 1 c. of water. Dissolve sugar over medium heat. Bring to a gentle boil for 5 minutes.
Spoon 1 T. syrup over each dumpling. Bake uncovered for 10 minutes. Remove from oven; pour remaining syrup over dumplings. Continue baking 25 to 30 minutes, basting occasionally with syrup, or until apples are tender.
Serve warm with syrup spooned over.
