Slow Cooker Apple Cinnamon & Walnut Steel-Cut Oatmeal

If you use 1/4 Tsp. of salt & 2 Tbsp. of brown sugar in the recipe, 1 Tbsp. maple syrup & 1 1/2 Tsp. of hazelnuts per serving, the following information is correct and by Cooking Light. I modify this recipe for my family to reduce sugar and sodium.

Ingredients

  • You can also use maple syrup and hazelnuts and add:
  • 1 1/2 - 1 1/2 cup fat-tree milk
  • 1 1/2 - 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 - 2 Gala apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2 inch cubes (about 3 cups)
  • 1 - 1 cup uncooked steel-cut oats
  • 1 1/2 - 1 1/2 Tbsp. butter, softened
  • 1/4 - 1/4 Tsp. ground cinnamon
  • Cooking Spray
  • Top with Agave Syrup or Honey & chopped Walnuts
  • 1/4 Tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • I omit these two ingredients to cut down on sugar and salt.

Step 1

1. Bring milk and water to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring frequently.

2. Place hot milk mixture, apple, and next 5 ingredients in a 3-quart slow cooker coated with cooking spray; stir well. Cover and cook on LOW 6 hours or until oats are tender.

3. Ladle oatmeal into individual bowls, top with agave syrup or honey and walnuts.
