French Onion Soup

Ingredients
- 2 T butter or margarine
- 2 c thinly sliced yellow onions (2lrg)
- 4 c beef broth
- 2 T dry sherry or dry white wine
- 1 t worcestershire sauce
- dash black pepper
- 6 slices French bread toasted
- 1 c shredded Swiss, Gruyere, or Jarlsburg cheese (4oz)

Preparation
Step 1
In a large saucepan melt butter; add onions. Cook covered, over med low heat for 8-10 min or until onions are tender and golden, stirring occasionally. Stir in broth, sherry, worcestershire sauce, and pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered for 10 min.
Meanwhile, sprinkle toasted bread with shredded cheese. Place bread under broiler until cheese melts and turns light brown. To serve, ladle soup into bowls and top with bread.
