- 1/8 tsp. baking soda

- 2 cups sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamion
- 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cupo shortening

- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- Vanilla ice cream

Step 1
In a large bowl, toss the first four ingredients. Pour into a greased 8-1n. square baking dish. In a bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder and baking soda. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over apple mixture.
Bake at 350*F for 55 60 min. or until apples are tender and topping is golden.
Another Version
In a dutch oven, combine the apples, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg; cook and stir over medium heat just until apples are tender. Set aside
In a large bowl, cream the shortening, butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Combine the flour, oats, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.
Pat half of flour mixture into a greased 13 x 9 baking dish. Spread apples over top; crumble remaining flour mixture over apples.
Bake at 400*F for 25-30 min. or until golden brown
