- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt (or kosher salt), divided

- 1/2 cup cold water, with ice

- 1 medium onion, minced
- 1 clove garlic, minced or pressed
- 2 Tbsp butter or margarine
- 1 can (8oz) stewed tomatoes, mashed
- 1 can (16oz) kidney beans, undrained
- 2 Tbsp hot chili sauce or more to taste
- 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar
- Salt to taste
