Butter Cut Out Cookies


These butter cut out cookies are melt in your mouth delicious! Use your favorite cut out and decorations to suit your theme or party.

  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 pound butter
  • 8 egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Zest of small lemon
  • 2 egg yolks for topping


Preparation time 15mins
Cooking time 25mins


Step 1

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Sift together flour, sugar, and baking soda. Add butter and work into flour mixture. Mix lightly & quickly with hands. Will feel grainy.

Make a well in the center and add eggs, rind, and lemon juice. Mix well until the mixture leaves the sides of the bowls. Remove from bowl and work until smooth on a floured surface.

Roll out on floured surface in circle and use small holiday cookie cutters. Transfer cutouts to cookie sheet. Beat the 2 egg yolks separately with 1 teaspoon water. Use this to paint the top of cut outs. Before this dries, sprinkle with colored sugar crystals.

Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden on the edges.
