  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 c chicken stock or broth
  • 1 c half-and-half
  • 1 lb haricots verts (French string beans), rinsed, trimmed and halved
