  • 1 TEASPOON BAKING SODA 1/4 CUP BUTTER
  • SET ASIDE AND LET SOFTEN 15 MINUTES OR SO
  • COMBINE: THEN ADD TO SOFTENED DATES
  • 1 CUP SUGAR
  • 1 AND 1/2 CUP FLOUR
  • 1 TEASPOON BAKING POWDER
  • 1 TEASPOON SALT
  • 1 BEATEN EGG
  • 1 TEASPOON VANILLA
  • GREASE BOTTOM OF RECTANGLE BAKING DISH
  • BAKE AT 350 DEGREES FOR 30 TO 35 MINUTES
  • SIMMER IN SAUCE-PAN UNTIL THICK AND DARK STIR OCCASIONALLY ABOUT 20 MINUTES OR SO:
  • 1 CUP CHOPPED DATES
  • 3/4 CUP COLD WATER
  • 1 TABLESPOON BUTTER
  • COOL CAKE AND TOPPING THEN SPREAD TOPPING ON CAKE AND SPRINKLE WITH CHOPPED NUTS
  • SERVE COOLED WITH COOL WHIP OR REAL WHIPPED CREAM
