If you've never made brown butter, you're missing out on something quite wonderful

  • 1 3/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour (8 3/4 ounces)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (3 1/2 ounces)
  • 3/4 cups packed dark brown sugar (5 1/4 ounces) (see note)
  • 1 teaspoon table salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1-1/2 cups Heath Toffee Bits*
  • 1-1/2 cup Hershey's Milk Chocolate Chips*
  • Optional: (substitute1 1/4 cups semisweet chocolate chips or chunks and, if desire, add 3/4cup chopped pecans or walnuts, toasted (optional)
