Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. beef cubed into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 Tbsp. worchestershire sauce
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 medium onion sliced
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • Dash of ground cloves or allspice
  • 3 large carrots sliced
  • 3 ribs celery chopped
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch + 1/4 cup cold water (to thicken gravy)

Step 1

Brown meat in hot oil. Add remaining ingredients, except carrots and celery. Cover and simmer 1+1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves. Add carrots and celery. cover and cook another 45 minutes, until vegetables are tender. To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups of hot liquid. Using a separate bowl, combine cornstarch mixture with hot liquid and return to pot, stir and cook until bubbly and thick.
