- Gluhwein, or "glow wine" is a traditional German beverage steeped with spices and sweetened with brown sugar.

These butterscotch cookies are heavily laced with toasted pecans and butterscotch chips
- 1 1/3 c. pecan halves
- 2/3 c. light brown sugar, firmly packed
- 2/3 c. granulated sugar
- 1/2 c. butter
- 1/2 c. vegetable shortening
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. espresso powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 3/4 tsp. butterscotch, vanilla-butternut, or butter-rum flavor
- 1 tsp. vinegar, cider or white
- 1 lg. egg
- 2 c. King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
- 1 1/3 c. butterscotch chips
- 1/3 c. granulated sugar mixed with 1 to 1 1/4 teaspoons salt, for topping*
- *If you're making smaller (teaspoon cookie scoop-sized) cookies, increase the coating to 1/2 cup (3 1/2 ounces) granulated sugar mixed with 1 3/4 to 2 teaspoons salt.

- 2 Tb. all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 c. chicken broth
- 1/4 c. capers, drained and rinsed
- 1 Tb. lemon zest
- 3 Tb. fresh lemon juice
- 2 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped
