Southern Beef Stew

This is a blend of a few recipes. None of them had all the ingredients that we liked. This one does!

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds stew beef
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1.5 cups beef stock
  • 1 cup good red wine
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon minced roasted garlic
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Greek seasoning
  • 1 Dash ground allspice
  • 3 packages of 16 oz beef stew vegetables (potatoes, pearl onions, carrots, peas, celery)
  • 1 6oz. package of uncooked mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional for thicker stew)

Step 1

Brown meat in hot oil. Add beef stock, wine, water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, sugar, pepper, paprika, and allspice. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves. Add packages of stew vegetables and Greek seasoning. Cover and cook 30 to 40 minutes longer. Add mushrooms. Stir and cook until bubbly.

Serve over a broad flat noodle.
