Italian Grilled Sausage Sandwich
Sausage sandwiches are a popular Italian street food. This recipe is quick, easy and an absolutely delicious main dish for a weeknight or casual entertaining.
Tip #1: Use any amount you want for this recipe because extra peppers and onions make a delicious sandwich the next day. Just add some good sharp Italian cheese and they can also be served that way for vegetarian guests.
Tip #2. All colors and varieties of peppers can be roasted either whole or cut into pieces. If you wish to peel them, remove the peppers from the grill once the skins are blackened and place them in a closed paper bag. The charred skin will slip off easily.
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 large green or red bell peppers, sliced into wide strips
- 2 large onions, sliced into rings
- 1/2 lb. Mozzarella cheese, sliced
- 2 lbs. Italian link sausage, mild or hot
- 8 Italian sandwich rolls or steak sandwich rolls
Heat grill on medium high heat cook onions and sauté until slightly wilted. Add peppers and cooked additional 8-10 min.
Meanwhile, cut sausages length wise. Place on hot grill and cook until browned on all sides and thoroughly done.
To serve, lay two slices Mozzarella cheese inside the bun, place a sausage in roll, and top with peppers and onions. Add enough onions and peppers so they start falling off because that’s half the enjoyment of eating one of these sandwiches.
