Ingredients

  • CRUST:
  • 4 c flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 c shortening
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 TBSP lemon juice
  • 10 TBSP cold water
  • FILLING:
  • 7 c finely chopped peeled granny smith apples (7 apples)
  • 2 c sugar
  • 1/4 c flour
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • dash ground nutmeg
  • GLAZE:
  • 1 c confectioner's sugar
  • 1 TBSP milk
  • 1 TBSP lemon juice

Preparation

Step 1

1. In large bowl combine flour, salt, baking powder.

2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

3. In small bowl, whisk egg yolks, lemon juice and water; gradually add to flour mixture, tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball.

4. Divide dough in 1/2 chill for 30 minutes.

5. Roll out 1 portion of dough between 2 large sheets of waxed paper into a 17 in x 12 in rectangle.

6. Transfer to a 15 x10x 1 in baking pan.

7. Press pastry into bottom of pan; trim pastry even with top edge.

8. In large bowl toss apples, sugar, flour cinnamon and nutmeg; spread over crust.

9. Roll our remaining pastry to fit over top of pan; place over filling.

10. Trim edges; brusht edges between pastry with water or milk; pinch the seal. Cut slits in top.

11. Bake at 375 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

12. Combine glaze ingredients until smooth, drizzel over bars before cutting.
