  • filling:
  • 2 1/2 cups chopped dates
  • 1 cup sugar 1 cup water
  • 1 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped
  • dough:
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda



Step 1

combine dates, sugar and water and cook until thick, about 10 minutes. Add nuts and cool.

cream shortening, add sugar, beaten eggs and beat well. Add rest of ingredients and mix well. Chill thoroughly. Divide dough into two parts and roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Spread with date filling and roll as for jelly roll. Chill overnight, then cut with sharp knife into 1/4 inch slices.

Bake in 375 to 400 degree oven till browned
