This sauce flavors the chicken with a sweet taste unobtainable any other way
- For the barbecue sauce:
- 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
- 12 ounce bottle chili sauce
- 1/3 cup maple-flavored syrup
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon ground hot pepper
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

- For the chicken:
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon ground hot red pepper flakes
- 4 chicken breast halves, with bones and skins, rinsed and patted dry
