Don't be tempted to substitute all-purpose flour for the cake flour, as doing so will make a dry, tough cake

  • Crumb Topping
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar (2 2/3 ounces)

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (3 1/2 ounces)
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon table salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (3/4 stick), cut into 6 pieces, softened but still cool
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • Confectioners' sugar for dusting

Unlike a traditional apple pie, slab pie is made in a baking sheet and can feed up to 20 people

  • Make Apple Slab Pie
  • 1 . Use water to "glue" together two pie crusts.
  • 2 . Add flavor to the store-bought crust by rolling it out in a mixture of crushed cookie crumbs and sugar.
  • 3 . Brush dough with melted butter for extra richness.
  • 4 . Top filled pie with second "double" crust.
  • 5 . Use a fork to tightly seal edges of crust.
