In slow cooker, combine soy sauce, sugar, chili-garlic sauce, ginger, five-spice powder, 1/2 tsp
- 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1-2 Tbsp. chili-garlic sauce
- 1 Tbsp. grated fresh ginger
- 1 tsp. Chinese five-spice powder
- Kosher salt and black pepper
- 2 1/2 lbs. pork shoulder, trimmed of excess fat and cut into 2-inch pieces
- 1 cup long-grain rice

In a food processor, mix the nuts into a fine powder
- 8 medjool dates pitted
- 1 cup almonds
- 1 cup walnuts (I used cashews)
- 1/4 cup + 1 T applesauce
- 1 heaping tsp cinnamon (maybe try apple pie spice mixture)
- Note: maybe try 1/8 tsp. vanilla

- Substitutes:
- 4 chicken breasts skinless and boneless
- 4 thin slices prosciutto di Parma
- 1/2 pound Gruyere, grated
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
- 4 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves only
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and finely minced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 eggs
- Extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 ) Smoked ham for the prosciutto di Parma from grocery deli section
- 2 ) Swiss cheese for the Gruyere cheese
- 3 ) Italian or regular bread crumbs for the panko bread crumbs

- SAUCE:
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup baking cocoa
- 1-1/2 cups boiling water
- CAKE:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup baking cocoa
- 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/3 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Wash the chicken under cold running water, pat dry and trim off any excess fat
- For the marinade/batter:
- 3 boneless chicken breasts (about 1 1/2 pounds total)
- 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
- 4 tablespoons water
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- For the sauce:
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon chili paste (recommended: Sambal Oelek)
- 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon sherry
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- Peanut oil, for deep-frying
- Salt
- 3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds, for garnish
- 2 to 3 tablespoons finely chopped scallions, for garnish
- 5 to 6 cilantro sprigs, for garnish
