Southern Corn Bread

mix together corn meal, baking powder, soda, and salt
- 2 cup corn meal (white or yellow)
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp soda
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 cups sour milk or buttermilk
- 2 eggs unbeaten
- 1/3 cup melted shortening

- 3 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 7 Tbsp salted butter, melted

- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 4 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup heavy cream

- 1 lb fresh strawberries, rinsed and dried
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp fresh lime or lemon juice
- 1 1 /2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp water
- 6 Tbsp salted butter
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup heavy cream

- 1 large egg yolk
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup ice water
- For the filling:
- 4 cups salted roasted mixed nuts
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chunks (about 10 ounces)
- 1 stick plus 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/4 cups packed light brown sugar
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
