- 1 pound elbow macaroni
- 1 tablespoon table salt
- 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons powdered mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

- 8 ounces Monterey Jack cheese , shredded (2 cups)

- 2 envelopes Fleischmann's Rapid Rise Yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 to 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
Flaky Buttermilk Biscuits

The dough is a bit sticky when it comes together and during the first set of turns
- 2 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour (12 1/2 ounces), plus additional flour for work surface
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon table salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening , cut into 1/2-inch chunks
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (1 stick), cold, lightly floured and cut into 1/8-inch slices (see illustration below)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter , melted
- 1 1/4 cups low-fat buttermilk , cold

- 1 cup chilled butter
- 5 cups unsifted flour
- 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water
Rhubarb Butter Crunch
