Fig and Walnut Coffee Cake

- For the walnut streusel:
- 2 ⁄3 cup chopped walnuts (or any nut you like, really)
- 2 ⁄3 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1 ⁄2 cup rolled oats
- 1 ⁄4 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tbsp. cinnamon
- 1 ⁄2 tsp. salt
- 8 tbsp. cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
- For the cornbread cake:
- 1 ⁄2 cup plus 2 tsp. room-temperature butter
- 3 cups figs, stems removed, divided
- 2 ⁄3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1⁄2 cups cornmeal
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 ⁄2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 ⁄2 tsp. salt
- 1 1⁄2 cups buttermilk
- 1 tsp. vanilla paste or extract
- 1 ⁄2 cup sour cream
- Whipped cream (optional)
Crême Brûlée Pie

1. Preheat the oven to 425° F
- For Crust:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 8 tablespoons very cold, unsalted butter
- Ice water, as needed
- All-purpose flour, as needed

- 1 1/3 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 vanilla bean, scraped

Weeknight Bolognese

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large (12-inch) skillet over medium-high heat
- 2 tablespoons good olive oil, plus extra to cook the pasta
- 1 pound lean ground sirloin
- 4 teaspoons minced garlic (4 cloves)
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 1/4 cups dry red wine, divided
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes, preferably San Marzano
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 3/4 pound dried pasta, such as orecchiette or small shells
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil leaves, lightly packed

Grilled Five-Spice Chicken Thighs with Soy-Vinegar Sauce & Cilantro

- 2 Tbs. Chinese five-spice powder
- 1 Tbs. plus 1 tsp. dark brown sugar
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 3/4 tsp. kosher salt

- 2 tsp. rice vinegar
- 1 tsp. Asian sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
- 2-1/2 lb. boneless, skinless chicken thighs (about 8 large, 10 medium, or 12 small), trimmed of excess fat

Kansas City Barbecued Brisket

- 1 1/2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon chili powder

- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder

- 1 (5- to 6-pound) brisket roast, fat scored at 1/2-inch intervals

- One 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Monterey Jack cheese
- 2 green onions, finely chopped
- 1 dash cayenne pepper
- 8 butter crackers, crushed, such as Ritz
- 8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
- Corn chips, crackers or bagel chips, for serving
