- 1 tbsp brown sugar

- 1/3 cup barley
- 4 cups chicken broth(32 oz box)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, finely diced
- 2 tsp kosher salt(or half as much table salt)
- 2 cloves garlic, pressed
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 stalks celery, diced with a handful of celery leaves, finely chopped
- 4 cups other vegetables-some combination of potatoes, cabbage, summer squash or green beans
- 1 (15oz) can chick peas
- or ther beans(drained)
- salt to taste
- olive oil and grated parmesan for garnishing
