Lots of times, I've made banana bread and noticed some recipes have had a bitter taste for some reason

  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup sieved ripened bananas (about 3 large)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sweet or sour milk
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted bread flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Preheat an oven to 325°F

  • 1 first or flat-cut brisket, 4 to 5 lb.
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 2 Tbs. olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped yellow onion
  • 1/2 cup diced carrot
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 can (28 oz.) plum tomatoes, with juices
  • 2 cups Merlot or other full-bodied red wine
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 Tbs. olive oil
  • 3 cups thinly sliced sweet onions such as Vidalia
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

  • 10 ounces watercress, about 7 bunches, washed well and tough stems removed
  • 4 egg whites, very cold
  • 1/2 cup very cold heavy cream
  • 5 ounces very cold scallops or peeled raw shrimp
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 pound puff pastry, thawed if frozen
  • 1 side of salmon, about 3 pounds, boned and skin removed
  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash
  • Sprigs fresh watercress, garnish
  • 3 tablespoons minced shallots
  • 1 cup Champagne
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 sticks butter, cut into small pieces
  • Salt
  • White pepper
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped chives
  • Buttered New Potatoes, recipe follows
  • 2 1/2 pounds small, red new potatoes (about 1 1/4-inches in diameter)

  • 2 cups chopped leeks
  • 1 cup chopped celery, about 2 stalks
