Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup dark corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Royal Icing for Glazing
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp light corn syrup
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups confectioner's sugar

Preparation

Step 1

1. Combine first 4 ingredients in sauce pan; cook and stir until shortening and sugar melt. Cool. Stir in beaten egg. Mix flour with soda and spices with whisk. Add flour mixture to mixing bowl. Add honey mixture; mix well.
2. Form into balls using one level tablespoon of dough for each ball; placed on a cookie sheet lined with parchment.
3. Bake at 375 for about 10 minutes til light brown
4. Cool
5. When cool, dunk cookies in glaze and dry on wire racks
6. Store in a container with waxed paper between layers

Royal Icing
1.Stir warm water, corn syrup and vanilla extract in a small bowl until corn syrup and vanilla have dissolved. Place confectioner's sugar into a separate bowl, add liquid ingredients. Beat with a electric mixer on low speed until icing is smooth. Can be store in a lidded container for up to a week, stir thoroughly before using

NOTE: Grandpa's favorite. Let age for one week to have spices blend
