Batch given to us by Marge Dattell, Spirit Lake, ID. Marge says that "I really preferred the bars." She also noted that she rolls the raisins or dates in a little flour to coat before adding to the batter. She said this recipe is from the Fannie Farmer Cookbook.

Ingredients

  • Frosting (if desired):
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp powdered cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (or margarine)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1 cup chopped raisins or dates
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • Confectioners' sugar
  • Hot milk

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 425 F for the cookies or to 350 F for the bars.

Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

Cream together till light the butter, sugar and white sugar. Stir in the egg and the applesauce. Add the flour mixture. Add the raisins or dates and the nuts.

For cookies, arrange by spoonfuls on cooky sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 40 or more.

For bars, spread in a 9-by-13-inch pan. Can be lined with foil or parchment paper. Bake until browned, about 30 to 40 minutes.

Can be frosted with confectioners' sugar moistened with hot milk. Cool and cut into bars.
