Ingredients
- 1-lb pkg dried split peas
- 1 medium onion-chopped
- 3-4 carrots-peeled and shredded
- 1 large potato-diced
- 1 -ham steak-cubed
- 1 bay leaf
- salt and pepper to taste

Preparation
Step 1
Rinse dried peas and pick out any foreign objects.
Place rinsed peas in large crock pot and cover with water. Add a little baking soda to water. Let set overnight on counter.
Next morning, drain peas and rinse well.
Add all other ingredients to rinsed peas and cover with water about 2 inches above vegetables. Cook on high until mixture comes to a boil; reduce heat to low and cook all day.
Remove bay leaf and ham bone (if there is one)
Serve with crusty bread.
