Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar, plus more for coating
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup dark molasses
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 3 1/2-4 cups flour

Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 F.
Cream butter, brown sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and molasses; beat until well blended. Add dry ingredients and mix well.
Shape the dough into 1 -inch balls. Roll in sugar to coat and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet.
Bake for 12-15 minutes. Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack.
Makes 3 dozen cookies.
Variation: Form cookie dough into 2-inch-diameter logs and slice in 1/4-inch rounds. Either sprinkle with sugar before baking or decorate after baking with icing and candies.
