Ingredients

    c shortening

  • 1

    c sugar

  • 2

    eggs

  • 1/2

    c cold water

  • 2

    tsp soda

  • 1

    c molasses

  • 1

    tsp ginger

  • 1

    tsp cinnamon

  • 1

    tsp salt

  • 4

    c (or more) flour

Directions

Cream shortening; add sugar gradually, then slightly beaten eggs; beat until well blended. Clean beaters. In very large bowl combine water, soda, and molasses; beat vigorously (mixture increases in volume as it's beaten). Add molasses mixture to shortening mixture; blend. Sift dry ingredients with 3 c flour; stir into dough. Turn dough out onto well floured board; knead remaining flour into dough until the right texture to roll- smooth to the feel and firm, not soft. Chill several hours or overnight. Roll 1/4 to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes. Arrange on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degress for 7 minutes or until done.
