Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature and beaten
  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted, plus extra melted butter to grease waffle iron

Preparation

Step 1

1. Preheat the waffle iron.

2. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl.

3. In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, buttermilk, and melted butter and whisk until well blended. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, and whisk until completely smooth.

4. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the waffle iron with melted butter. This prevents the waffles from sticking and also gives them a nice golden color. Do this for every waffle.

5. Pour the appropriate amount of batter for your particular appliance into the hot waffle iron. Bake the waffles until golden brown. Continue until all the batter is used up.

6. These waffles may be kept on a cookie sheet in a 200 degree F. oven until served, however, they are best served right from the waffle iron.

7. These waffles can also be cooled to room temperature and frozen in a zippered freezer bag. Frozen waffles can be heated up very nicely in the toaster.
