- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 3 Tbsp shortening
- 3/4 cup milk

Mix flour, baking powder and salt in medium bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in milk. Drop dough by spoonfuls onto hot meat or vegetables in boiling stew (do not drop directly into liquid). Cook uncovered 10 minutes. Cove and cook 10 minutes longer.
CHEESE DUMPLINGS: Add 1/4 cup shredded sharp cheese with the flour.
HERB DUMPLINGS: Add 1 1/2 tsp chopped fresh or 1/2 tsp dried herbs (such a sage leaves, celery seed or thyme leaves) with the flour.
PARSLEY DUMPLINGS: Add 3 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley or chives with the flour
