Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup raw sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 cup chocolate stout beer (I used Odell’s Lugene)
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • chocolate syrup
  • caramel syrup

Preparation

Step 1

In a large saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until scalding (not boiling). Whisk in the cocoa powder, sugar, chili powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Whisk continuously, until no lumps remain and the sugar has disintegrated. Lower the heat to medium low, and gently whisk in the chocolate stout beer. Heat the mixture 4-5 minutes more, or until the flavor is to your liking.

Please note: if you would like more of a beer-like, bitter taste, cook for only 2-3 minute (just to heat the beer through). If you would like for most of the alcohol to be cooked out, continue to cook 5-6 minutes.

Remove from heat and pour the hot chocolate into serving glasses. Garnish with mini marshmallows, chocolate syrup and caramel syrup. Serve immediately and enjoy!
