Removing Spots on Clothing Caused by Fabric Softener Sheets
By Hklbrries
Dear Heloise: My mother has a couple of nice blouses that have a few light, noticeable spots on them. She said they just appeared after washing and drying them one day. She thinks they could be from the fabric-softener sheets. Have you ever heard of dryer sheets doing that to a piece of clothing? If so, is there any way to get the stain out?
Cheryl Curry, via email
Heloise: Yes, there is, and it's pretty easy. Just rub the wet fabric with a bar of soap, or put a little liquid laundry detergent on the area, then rub it in and rewash the item as usual. As always, check your garment-care tag, because some tags will state "No fabric softener."
If the fabric is polyester, it just may be the softener sheet. Too small a load of laundry can't "distributed" the fabric softener evenly, and so if you must do a small load, it it helpful to put a damp bath towel or two in. Too many clothes, and the fabric-softener sheet can't move around.
