Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 Tbs honey
  • 2 Tbs shortening
  • 1 Tbs salt
  • 1 cup milk, scalded
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 5-6 cups unbleached flour

Preparation

Step 1

Dissolve yeast in the warm water. Set aside
In large bowl mix together honey, shortening, salt and scalded milk. Add the cup of cold water and allow mixture to cool to lukewarm. Add dissolved yeast. Gradually add flour until dough is stiff. Turn onto floured surface and knead until dough is smooth and elastic. Will have some bubbles. Then put dough ball into greased bowl, cover with damp cloth and set in warm place. Let rise until doubled in size. Punch down. Shape into two loaves and put into greased bread pans. Cover and let rise until dowgh is well rounded above top of pans. Brush tops of loaves with butter.

Bak in 375' F oven for 30-40 until golden brown. Turn out of pans immediately and cool on wire rack.
