  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c butter
  • 1/2 C shortening
  • 3 T sugar
  • 1 t salt
  • 3/4 C milk
  • 4 1/4 C flour
  • 3 eggs separated
  • 1/2 t vanilla
  • 1 C sugar
  • 1 recipe filling.



Step 1

Soften yeast in 1/4 C warm water. Cream butter, lard, 3 T sugar and salt. Add milk, 1 C of flour, yeast mix, egg yolks and vanilla; beat well. Add 1 1/4 C more flour, beat well. Gradually stir in remaining flour. Place in greased bowl: turn once to grease. Cover, let rise 2 hrs. Punch down; divide in 1/3's let rest 10": Beat egg whites to soft peaks, add remaining sugar, beating to stiff peaks.
On flouered surface, rol1 portion of dough to 10X8" rectangle. Spread w/1/3 of meringue within 1" of edge. sprinkle w/1/3 filling fold in 1/2 lengthwise. Pinch edges to seal and repeat w/ remaining dough and filling. Bake 350 for 25" and cool. Drizzle w/powd sugar icing. Makes 3.

1 C chopped walnuts
1 C raisins
1/2 C packed brown sugar
1 t cinnamon ground-mix all together well.
