Ingredients

  • Wash:
  • 1/3 c. butter, softened plus 1 Tbs.(1/2 butter, 1/2 shortening)
  • 2/3 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 Tbs. cinnamon
  • 1 &3/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • Scant 1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. miniature semisweet chocolate
  • 3/4 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten
  • 1 Tbs. water

Step 1

Preheat 375 degrees. Grease baking sheets or line with parchment paper.

In large bowl, cream together butter & sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one @ a time, then stir in vanilla. Combine flour, cocoa & baking powder; stir into creamed mixture until well blended. Dough will be stiff, so mix in the last bit by hand. Mix in the chocolate chips & nuts.

Divide dough into 2 equal parts. Shape into 9X2X1 in. loaves. Place onto baking sheet 4 in. apart. Brush with mixture of water & yolk.

Bake 20-25 min. until firm. Cool on baking sheet for 30 min.

Using serrated knife, slice loaves diagonally into 1 in. slices. Return slices to the baking sheet, placing them on their sides. Bake about 5 min. on each side. Cool completely & store in airtight container.
