Ingredients
- 1 1/2 c all purpose flour (I use 2 c and adjust whole wheat as noted below)
- 1 1/2 c whole wheat pastry flour (I use 1 c whole wheat flour since I don't have pastry flour)
- 1 T baking powder
- 1/2 t baking soda
- 1/4 t salt (perhaps a bit more)
- 1/2 c brown sugar
- 8 T butter - cold and cut into 1 T pieces
- 1 c mixture* of dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, or carob chips
- 1 c buttermilk
- Grated rind of one orange is good addition mixed with dry ingredients.

Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Mix flours, baking powder, soda, salt, and brown sugar in medium mixing bowl.
Using a pastry cutter, cut in butter until small pea-sized pieces are formed.
Stir in chips, nuts, dried fruit mixture.
Stir in buttermilk. DO NOT OVERWORK. Turn onto floured board and knead several times to finish mixing. Dough will appear dry but will come together as you press and knead. Divide into two portions and flatten each to a 3/4" round disc. Cut each into pie pieces making triangles. Can also roll and cut with round biscuit cutter.
Place on greased baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes until lightly brown and firm.
*Be creative - any combination of the following: golden raisins; currants; dried cranberries, blueberries, or cherries; sliced almonds; walnuts; pecans; white chocolate chips; carob chips.
