Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups quick cooking oats
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup zante currants
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Preparation

Step 1

Combine oats and milk. Let stand while preparing remaining ingredients. Resift flour with salt, baking powder and nutmeg. Cream shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla together well. Blend in flour mixture. Stir in oats, currants and walnuts; mix well. Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets. Bake in hot oven (400 F) 10 minutes, until lightly browned. Let stand a minute, then remove to wire racks to cool.
