Spicy Split Pea Dip 1 Picture

Ingredients

  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 1/2 C. water
  • 8 oz. dried split peas
  • 1/4 C. minced serrano chiles
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 tomatoes peeled and chopped
  • 2 Tbsp. cilantro leaves chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp sesame oil
  • salt

Preparation

Step 1

Saute onion, cumin, and chiles in 2 Tbsp of the oil until onions are soft but not brown. Add bay leaf, water and peas. Bring to boil, remove from flame, let set for 30 minutes.

Bring back to boil, then simmer for 20 minutes until peas are tender. Pour off and save liquid. Toss in blender with tomatoes, lemon juice, sesame oil, cilantro, garlic, additional olive oil, cooking liquid as needed to bring to dipping consistency and salt to taste.

Place in bowl, garnish with black olives, radishes, fresh greens and serve with dippers of your choice.
