Ingredients

  • 7 to 7 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. crisco/shortening
  • 1/4 c. water
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. cinnamon
  • softened butter/margarine

Preparation

Step 1

1. in large mixer bowl, combine 3 1/2c. flour and the yeast.
2. in saucepan, heat together milk, 1/2c. sugar, crisco, water and salt until just warm (about 130 degrees F)
3. add to dry ingredients in mixer bowl. add eggs, then beat at low speed for 30 seconds, scraping sides of bowl. beat 3 min at high speed.
4. by hand, stir in enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. turn out on lightly floured surface, knead until smooth.
5. place in greased bowl, turn onto greased surface. cover, let rise until double (about 1 hr). punch down, divide in half, cover and let rest 10 minutes.
6. roll each half to 15x7" rectangle, about 1/2" thick.
7. combine the 3/4c. sugar and the cinnamon. brush entire surface of dough with water.
8. sprinkle with all but 2 tbsp. of cinnamon and sugar mixture. roll up jelly roll fashion, beginning with the narrow side. seal long edge. place sealed edge down in 2 greased 9x5x3" loaf pans. let rise until almost double, 45-60 min.
9. just before baking, brush loaves with softened butter and sprinkle with remaining cinnamon sugar. bake at 375 degrees F for 35-40 min or until done.
