Ingredients
- Filling:
- 2 1/4 c. flour, divided
- 1/4 c. water
- pinch of salt
- 1 c. shortening
- 1/2 c. maple syrup, divided
- 3 lb. (8 to 9 c.) thinly-sliced apples
- 1 1/4 c. sugar
- 1/4 c. lemon juice
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- Topping:
- 1 c. flour
- 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
- 1/2 c. cold butter
- 1 c. chopped pecans

Preparation
Step 1
In bowl, combine 1/4 cup flour and water until smooth; set aside. In large bowl, combine salt and remaining flour. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add reserved flour mixture; knead until dough forms a ball. Press dough on bottom and upsides of an ungreased 10 x 15 x 1-inch jellyroll pan. Spread 1/4 cup syrup over crust. Arrange apples over syrup. Combine sugar, lemon, cinnamon, vanilla and remaining syrup; drizzle over apples.
Topping: Combine all ingredients in bowl and sprinkle over filling. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
Pastry is easily pressed into pan by placing a large sheet of plastic wrap on top of dough.
