Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tsps baking powder
  • 3/4 c milk
  • 1/3 c shortening

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl. Add shortening. Use a pastry cutter or two knives to cut-in the shortening until the mixture is coarse and crumbly. Make a well in the mixture and add milk all at once. Stir the mixture with a fork until the dough follows the fork around the bowl and is soft.

Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead it gently with 10-12 strokes. Pat or roll the dough into a 1-1 1/2 inch thick sheet.

Dip a 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter in flour and cut biscuits out. Grease a 9x13 pan and group the biscuits tightly together. Brush the tops with vegetable oil and bake until golden brown, about 12 minutes.
