Ingredients
- 4 c. fresh tomatoes, diced (about 5 med. tomatoes)
- 3/4 c. slivered red onion
- 1/2 c. water
- 1/3 c. olive oil
- 1/3 c. white wine vinegar
- 1 tsp. ground black pepper
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1/2 c. shredded fresh basil
- 6 c. day-old, dense, crusty bread, cut or torn into 1-inch cubes

Preparation
Step 1
Combine all ingredients, except bread, in a large bowl; let stand, allowing flavors to develop, about 10 minutes. Add bread; toss well to coat. If bread seems dry, sprinkle with an additional tablespoon or two of water. Will hold several hours at room temperature.
