  • 1 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 pound brown sugar (2 1/2 packed cups)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat the oven to 300. Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan or bundt pan.

In a large bowl, combine the butter and shortening and beat, using an electric mixer, until creamy. Add the brown and granulated sugars and beat until light and fluffy. One at a time, add the eggs, beating well after each addition. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk to the sugar mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix in the vanilla.

Scrape the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool in the pan for 20 minutes. Turn the cake out onto the rack and cool completely.
