  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 TBSP butter
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 6 small apples

To make the syrup: Mix 1 cup sugar, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, and 1-3/4 cups water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat. Simmer 5 minutes, remove from heat and stir in butter. To make the pastry: Mix flour and 1/4 tsp. salt. Cut in shortening until coarse crumbs form. Add 6 to 8 TBSP water, a little bit at a time. Mix until moistened and form into a ball. Roll into 18 X 12inch rectangle. Cut into six 6-inch squares. Peel and core apples. Place one apple on each pastry square. Combine remaining sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and sprinkle over fruit. Moisten edges of pastry. Fold corners into middle on top of apples. Pinch to seal. Place in baking pan, pour syrup over. Bake at 345F degrees for 45 minutes.
