Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 bottle red food coloring
  • 1 bottle water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Frosting:
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Cake:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream Crisco and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat. Add food coloring and water.

Sift salt, cake flour, and cocoa. Add alternately to above mixture with buttermilk.

Mix together vanilla, vinegar, and baking soda. Fold into above mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.

Frosting:

Mix together flour, salt, and milk. Cook until thick. Cool.

Cream together Crisco, sugar, and vanilla. Add to cooked mixture. Beat until smooth.
