Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment or a Silpat.

Beat the butter, brown sugar, and 1/2 cup sugar until creamy. Add the egg, vanilla, and milk and beat again.

Stir together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Slowly add to the butter mixture until a soft dough forms. Chill dough for at least half an hour.

Roll the dough into 18 even dough balls and roll each one in the remaining sugar.

Place a popsicle stick in the center of each dough ball and place half of them on the prepared pan with room around each one.

Press each dough ball flat with a glass cup that has a flat bottom. Each cookie should be about 1/4 inch thick. Bake 10 minutes. Remove and cool on the pan for 2 minutes before removing them gently from the pan. Let cookies cool completely.

Divide the vanilla frosting into two bowls. Tint one bowl of frosting orange.

Spread frosting on the cookies and decorate with the candies, eyes, and sprinkles. Store in a sealed container on the counter for a few days.

Yield: 18 cookies
